RandoCamping – v1.0 – 🇬🇧 English

This page is the English translation of the « RandoCamping – v1.0 » page.

The RandoCamping website can be automatically translated into English with most browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari).

The rainy days of recent months have been used to develop this new version of RandoCamping. To discover all the new features, the easiest way is to visit the What’s New? page of the website.

Otherwise, here is a presentation of the site in its new version:

Main Features

Accommodation Database

The site uses data from the DataTourisme platform to list and classify several types of accommodation:

  • Campsites: classified by category (unrated, 1–3 stars, 4–5 stars).
  • Specific campsites: farm campsites, natural areas, naturist campsites.
  • Other accommodations: youth hostels, hiking lodges, refuges, hiker stops.

Specific filters allow for refined searching:

  • Pitches for tents.
  • Open all year round.
  • Labeled « Accueil Vélo ».
  • Municipal accommodations.
  • Presence of cabins for hikers.
  • Reviews from RandoCamping users.

Each accommodation is represented by an icon on the map. Clicking it opens a detail sheet with key information (name, photo, contact, location, etc.).

Contribution and Recommendations

Users can:

  • Add, edit, or report accommodations (after moderation approval).
  • Post reviews to recommend appreciated accommodations.

Accommodation Search

Near a route or places

The user can import a GPX track and define a maximum distance (2–20 km) to search for accommodations near their route (or near marked points on the map).

Selected accommodations can be:

  • Downloaded as a PDF file with all useful information.
  • Exported as a GPX file with location and accommodation details.
  • Saved in the user area as a shareable link.

Map Backgrounds

While the default background is OpenStreetMap, users can choose CyclOsm, TopoMap, or IGN map layers.

Cycling and Hiking Routes

Waymarked Trails pedestrian and cycling routes can be overlaid on the map along with accommodations and train lines.

Additional Modules

Train Module

This module displays train lines and stations in France. By clicking on a station, users can access information such as:

  • Platform accessibility for non-folded bikes.
  • Direct links to SNCF timetables, regional TER pages, SNCF Connect.
  • Map display of stations directly accessible without transfers.
  • Detailed map of the area around the station.

Route Editing and Calculation Module

Users can:

  • Create and edit routes (automatic tracing, merge, split).
  • Change the routing engine (BRouter, OpenRoute Service).
  • Export routes in GPX format.
  • Overlay a bike path layer to incorporate these into routes.

Geolocation and GPS Tracking

  • The map can be centered via geolocation.

While on the move, GPS tracking automatically pans the map based on the user’s position.

Streetview

With a single click on the map background, users can access the 360° view from Google Streetview — a practical way to verify a route visually.

Help page
The help page includes 21 short videos, each presenting a feature of the site.

Website or App?

It is primarily a website, as a large screen is preferable to view all accommodations on the map.

However, the site is also compatible with smartphones and tablets. While traveling, it can be used to view accommodation info — provided a 4G connection is available. Moreover, the site works offline or with low connectivity, as long as data has been preloaded.

Finally, RandoCamping can be installed like any other app on your smartphone.

Conclusion

RandoCamping is a practical and collaborative tool designed to simplify hike planning by combining accommodation data, train access, and simple route editing and calculation tools.
